Advice
Do I need a rewire? Start with the condition, not the age.
The useful questions to ask before committing to a full rewire, and how to make the eventual scope clearer.
An old installation is a reason to check.
Age alone does not establish that a home needs rewiring. An inspection can help assess the installation's condition and identify appropriate work. A qualified electrician should explain the findings before a full replacement is recommended.
Take recurring problems seriously.
Repeated trips, damaged accessories or signs of overheating deserve professional attention. Do not remove covers or repeatedly reset a circuit to investigate. Describe what you have noticed from a safe distance and arrange a qualified assessment.
Explain how the home will be used.
List the rooms being changed and the equipment you plan to use. Think about desks, kitchen appliances, bedside charging and outdoor spaces. This gives the survey a practical brief and helps separate necessary repairs from improvements you would like.
Ask what the quote includes.
Agree socket positions, fittings, access, power interruptions and the installation paperwork. Check who lifts floors, removes waste, repairs plaster and decorates. Two prices are easier to compare when they describe the same work and the same finishing responsibilities.
Plan the disruption before the start date.
Tell the contractor about home working, tenants and equipment that must remain powered. Ask for a realistic programme and a clear point for approving changes. Use the demo rewire page to see how those questions can become a written scope.
