Walnut worktable with stone, timber and linen samples in an imagined Mayfair studio.

The studio, imagined

Room for a quieter kind of design

Stauzu imagines a small Mayfair studio where the plan, the materials and the objects are considered around the same table.

The plan comes first

A beautiful surface cannot put a doorway in the right place. The starting point is how a room is used: the route through it, the light at different hours and the things that need somewhere to belong.

The material palette follows those decisions. Oak, stone, plaster and bronze are chosen for the jobs they do in the room as much as for their appearance. A smaller number of finishes can leave more room to notice a grain, a shadow or the edge of a piece of furniture.

A studio around one table

The people in this imagined practice work across three connected roles. Design direction holds the overall idea; spatial design tests it against the plan; material research gives it texture and scale.

These are roles within a fictional studio, not biographies of practising staff. The concept focuses on how a compact team might work together rather than inventing professional credentials or a history of commissions.

Design direction

Keeps the central idea clear, from the first conversation to the relationship between the rooms.

Spatial design

Tests movement, useful dimensions and light, then develops joinery and furniture around them.

Material research

Compares finishes, textiles and objects in the light of the room, with attention to texture and proportion.

From a question to a room

01 · Listen and look

Begin with the property and the daily life it needs to support. Establish what should change and what deserves to stay.

02 · Test the plan

Compare layouts, clearances and light before treating a drawing as the answer.

03 · Work with the materials

Set samples beside one another. Check the scale of the furniture and the way a finish changes across a room.

04 · Bring the parts together

Coordinate the room as a whole, then edit the final layer so that the original idea is still visible.

Mayfair, as a working setting

The imagined studio is set in Mayfair, London: a material table, shelves for samples and enough wall space to leave a plan up while it changes. It is a setting for the design story, not a physical office open to visitors. The site does not offer real appointments.
